A wallet falls to the street silently, from the folds of a man’s coat,
as he bustles out of a cab on Parliament Street.
At least that’s how I pictured when I bent down
and picked up the dark lump myself from where it lay.
An amazing old photo I.D. from the 80s showed a widely smiling,
tanned fellow with abundant Greek ringlets for hair,
so I looked up the name and left a message,
“Charles Ringas my name is John MacLean,
and if you don’t know it already, you’re missing your wallet!
So call me back”.
Giving or receiving, the universe feels kind in those moments,
and he was very happy when we met.
We talked music for a long time and found we had an uncanny
amount of overlapping experiences on the same Toronto streets,
playing the same venues, in the same studios.
It felt charmed, maybe too charmed to be real.
But at our next meeting I learned that Charlie is always Charlie
and those channels and passions are always open
and we began to discuss making this great record together.
